Become a Mentor
Mentoring matters
For more than 40 years, mentoring has been a core component of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation program and its success. IHDF-Atlanta matches Dreamer Scholars with consistent, trusted adults outside
of the family, exposing them to a variety of positive experiences and establishing a long-term relationship built on trust, guidance and connection.
We have a goal of matching ALL Dreamers with
a dedicated mentor who will be in their corner for life
We ask for 1 connection each week between mentors and mentees for a minimum of one school-year (but mentors can and should stay connected for as long as the match is mutually beneficial)
What Does It take to Become an IHDF-Atlanta Mentor?
As an IHDF mentor, you’ll join a powerful community of adults focused on supporting our Dreamer Scholars. In the first two months, mentors participate in an interactive mentor training, followed by a mentee introduction. Elementary Mentors are asked to spend one hour per week in person with their mentee. By maintaining regular contact, mentors enhance their impact as a friend, counselor, teacher and confidant.
Other Requirements:
Academic and community-based mentors must be 18 years of age or older, and
Complete a safety application, necessary background checks and interview
Attend a brief mentor training session to learn more about positive mentorship and youth development
